What is it and how does it work?

Ivermectin

Ivermectin works by reducing inflammation and skin mites (Demodex).

Metronidazole

Metronidazole may reduce skin inflammation.

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid may reduce skin inflammation.

Topical Minocycline

Minocycline reduces inflammation in rosacea.

Who is it for?

Ivermectin

Mild to severe pimples.

Metronidazole

Mild to severe pimples.

Azelaic Acid

Mild to severe pimples.

Topical Minocycline

Moderate to severe pimples.

Who is it not for?

Ivermectin

Patients who are sensitive to ivermectin or other ingredients.

Metronidazole

Patients who are sensitive to metronidazole or other ingredients of the formulations.

Azelaic Acid

Patients sensitive to azelaic acid or other ingredients in the product.

Topical Minocycline

People sensitive to minocycline or other ingredients.

How well does it work?

Ivermectin

This treatment has a 2 times greater chance of reducing pimples compared to no active treatment (high certainty).

Metronidazole

This treatment has a 2 times greater chance of reducing pimples compared to no active treatment (moderate certainty).

Azelaic Acid

This treatment has a 1.5 times greater chance of reducing pimples compared to no active treatment (high certainty).

Topical Minocycline

1.5% topical minocycline has a 1.5 times greater chance of achieving almost clear skin or better than no active treatment (moderate certainty).

What are the possible side effects?

Ivermectin

Serious: None

Other: Localized burning, Skin irritation

Pregnancy: Category C

Metronidazole

Serious: None

Other: high blood pressure, headache, redness, inflammation, skin burning sensation, worsening of pimples, itchiness, skin irritation, stinging, sun sensitivity, urinary tract infection, local allergy, flu, upper respiratory tract infection

Pregnancy: Category B

Azelaic Acid

Serious: None

Other: Skin burning sensation, stinging, tingling, itchiness, redness, skin irritation, acne, irritation, skin peeling, sun sensitivity, dry skin, pain

Pregnancy: Category B

Topical Minocycline

Serious: None

Other: Burning sensation of skin, redness, peeling, itchiness, stinging, blood vessel lines, sun sensitivity, Flushing, diarrhea, headache.

Pregnancy: Topical minocycline should be avoided during pregnancy if possible. Category D.
